Only 30 minutes from Canberra, and held annually on the third weekend of October, the event is community run with all profits going back to the region’s community groups. There will be food and wine, both antique and modern farm machinery, shearing, live music, helicopter rides, animals and everything you never wanted to know (but need to know!) about snakes.
This year, especially for kids, the Rural Fire Service will have its Smoke House onsite to demonstrate the dangers of smoke in a fire. Outback Pony Rides will be giving kids the experience of riding a pony and there’ll be face painting, balloon twisting, a farmyard petting zoo and paint your own ceramics. With amusement rides, bubble soccer on the oval, horses, cattle, sheep, sheepdogs and alpacas, there’s more than enough to keep kids of all ages entertained.
The community event has grown from 23 exhibitors at the first Field Days in 1979 to around 22,000 people, including 500 exhibitors, last year.
The Yass Valley has a proud heritage connection to early rural Australia, from fine wool to flour mills and a burgeoning wine industry in the 1800s. That industry has continued and the region now also boasts one of Australia’s best cool climate wine regions. Some of these award winning cool climate wines will on display in the inaugural 2017 Marketplace.
The Murrumbateman Field Days really is a country experience for the whole family. As always, it will be a jam packed two days on the weekend of October 21-22, so don’t forget you can pre-purchase your tickets online at www.mfdays.com
