What is so great about this musical is the catchy music and varied songs. They cross all styles from rock n roll to calypso to country and western and pop.
The musical is performed in the beautiful St Saviour’s Cathedral, which is an added bonus.
The set is a simple stage with a few doors for actors to pass through but the players also make use of the natural features of the Cathedral such as the pulpits.
This musical features a great cast, but special mention must be made of the three principal singers – Ebrentia Brits, Rebecca Sampson and Nathanael Patterson. The harmonies these two women create are breathtaking, especially in the beautiful resonant surrounds of the Cathedral.
They are also obviously having great fun while singing these songs and this comes across as well.
Nathaneal Patterson is a young man with an amazing voice. He is a great selection for the main role. He has power in his voice when needed and a great range. He nails these great songs and is also very entertaining to watch.
The rest of the cast do a fine job in supporting these three principal singers, and a special mention must be made of Richard Orchard playing and Elvis-style Pharaoh and also Caitlin Jier for the variety of roles she plays, particularly as the seductive Potiphar’s wife.
The young people playing the brothers and the chorus were especially enthusiastic. The girl operating the camel – 11-year-old Grace Robinson – did a great job.
For those who don’t know the biblical tale it does not matter as all is revealed on stage.
This is just such a fun catchy musical and is among Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice’s best.
The band achieved a fine balance of volume in the Cathedral without overpowering the singers and this is important in such a space.
The variety of instruments was also pleasing – from the standard bass, drums, keyboard and guitar to flute, saxophone, recorder and cello.
The whole team that pulled this together did a really fine job.
This production is really something special to see – some great singing in such a spiritual place. It is only on for three more productions this weekend – so don’t miss out – this is really worth seeing. It is on:
