Bangkok: Police have arrested a 72 year-old retired Australian man after he was allegedly caught with drugs in the southern riverside Cambodian town of Kampot.
Gary Robert Knowles, from Canberra, faces years in Cambodia's notoriously harsh jails if convicted of drugs charges.
Police said they discovered nine boxes of ecstasy and other drugs in a raid on a rented house in the town on Friday.
Police also arrested a 28 year-old Cambodian women identified as Meas Phary.
They said they also seized five mobile telephones, smoking kits and cash.
Police released photographs of the couple sitting behind a table with drugs.
Cambodian authorities have been conducting a nationwide crackdown on illegal drugs in the country once known as a haven for drug users.
Giuseppe Nicolosi, a 61 year-old Australia convicted child sex offender died last week after serving seven years of an eight-year jail sentences in Prey Sar, one of the country's harshest jails on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.
Basic medical and other needs are not available in most Cambodian jails.
Australian filmmaker James Ricketson is in declining health in Prey Sar while authorities investigate allegations of spying, which he strongly denies.
Family members say Ricketson, 67, from Sydney has high blood pressure, which is un-medicated, among other ailments.
