The Goulburn Mulwaree Council has received $549,630 as part of the NSW Government Waste Less Recycle More program.
Changes will include fortnightly organic collection, the rollout of 240L organic waste bins and an educational program.
Residents in rural areas will not be eligible for the green waste bins.
“The NSW Government is actively working with councils to increase the rollout of green-bin collection services, with the aim to reduce organic and food waste,” MP Pru Goward said.
The council was one of seven projects to take a share of the $2m program and received the largest chunk of the grant.
“Fortnightly organic waste collections are something that we have been looking at implementing for some time now, and this grant is a huge boost that will enable us to do this sooner rather than later,” mayor Bob Kirk said.
“Council will now also be able to provide residents with their own green waste bins, and we will be undertaking extensive education activities aimed at reducing contamination and getting food waste into organic bins – all aimed at reducing waste and being more sustainable in our practices.”
