He has performed at the festival 10 times over the event’s 22-year history. He was also the event’s ambassador for three years.
Spiegel is a world-class blues player, having recorded nine albums. He is constantly touring all over the world.
“The guitar is an excellent passport and music is a currency accepted everywhere,” Spiegel said.
“I think Australia deserves a national blues event and Goulburn has always been that,” he said.
“One of the great things about Goulburn is that it is very much owned by the artists. So many other festivals want to bring the big international artists and they can overshadow the local artists.
“The festival in Goulburn is for those artists who work year in year out and it feels like we have some ownership of it.
“It is a real celebration of Australian blues because these artists can stand up with the best of them anywhere in the world. Every act at the festival is always top class Australian blues talent.”
Speigel is playing two shows at the festival – at the Astor Hotel.
“I love playing at the Astor and I have a real affinity with the town,” he said.
“I remember when I was younger I would be the larrikin out late at night. These days I finish my show, have a glass of red and hit the sack.
“It is fun to watch the antics of the younger musicians. You can try to go hard forever but forever won't last long.”
SpiegeI released his ninth album – This Time Tomorrow, last June. He and the album are for three Chain Awards this weekend.
“The last album I did won four of those awards, so I am feeling a bit of pressure there,” he said.
He tours constantly.
“Since I was last in Goulburn I have toured 15 countries,” he said.
“The reality is I only know how to do one thing and I have to do it in different ways. I just do one Australian tour a year and play each major city over two months.”
