Their love and devotion to each other will be remembered in a memorial rose garden near the couple’s former Auburn Street home.
Councillors unanimously decided on Tuesday to add ‘Jockey’s name to the Phyllis Rudd Rose Garden. Cr Margaret O’Neill said this was always the intention and it was only fitting given his tremendous community contribution.
Mrs Rudd died in 2008, while Jockey passed away at Waminda Aged Care Facility on December 15, 2017, aged ninety-two.
Good friend of the couple, Ev Boswell, suggested the honour to Mayor Bob Kirk following the funeral. Jockey’s niece, Katrina, then wrote to the council requesting the naming.
“I’m very happy about that. (This way) they will be recognised together,” Mrs Boswell said of the decision.
Mrs Boswell cared for Jockey for nine years following Mrs Rudd’s death. She had made a promise to her friend that she would do so.
