Club members decided to change the name in memory of Joe Cooke who we sadly lost several years ago. Joe was a highly respected member of our club. He was passionate about his bowling and encouraged young players. Joe was a past president of the club and was the mainstay in running our very successful Rose Tournament for many years.
We were privileged and appreciated having Joe’s wife Judy in attendance at the final of this inaugural championship on Friday.
We had excellent nominations for this Championship this year and it has been played over the last two months. This will be our main championship that is played for eligibility to represent the club in the ACT Champion of Champions.
John Ensbey was this year’s winner after defeating Keith Gray 25 to 15 in match that showed the great bowling abilities of both these bowlers. They both had to win four matches to get into the final and beat some of our top bowlers.
John had to defeat some of our top players like Hayden Ward among others who was last year’s Singles Champion to get to the finals. John will now represent Goulburn Railway Bowling Club in the ACT Champion of Champions for this year. Keith was on the bottom of the draw and also had some very competitive bowlers to overcome to get to this position. One to mention was Warren Guyer among others, who is also one of our top bowlers.
Our congratulations go to both of these bowlers but there can only be one winner and this year John Ensbey was victorious.
It has been the Railway Bowling Club Men’s Bowls Committees pleasure to make these changes. Joe was a highly respected member of our club and we look forward to watching nominations grow even further in future years. The bowling club is always looking for new member or people who have moved to the area and would like to resume playing the sport. Spectators are also welcome to drop by and take a look at the games being played. Young people are especially welcome.
