A man has appeared in Goulburn Local Court on historical child sexual assault charges.
The 55-year-old man, of Queanbeyan, and formerly of Goulburn, appeared in Goulburn Local Court on April 11 in relation to the charges.
In September 2017, officers from The Hume Police District commenced Strike Force Ralston.
The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the alleged sexual assaults of children in Goulburn between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s.
On September 19, 2017, Strike Force officers arrested the man at Queanbeyan.
He was charged with two counts of aggravated indecent assault – victim under authority, which allegedly took place in 1992.
He was granted conditional bail and appeared at Goulburn Local Court on November 8, 2017.
Following further inquiries, Strike Force officers arrested the man again on March 6, 2018 and laid further charges.
He was charged with eight counts of sexual assault – assault and indecent act and one count of sexual intercourse – person 10 & under 16 – under authority.
Police said these additional charges allegedly related to two further complainants and allegedly occurred in 1989 and 1990 and 1986 and 1987.
The police charge sheets filed in Goulburn Local Court state some of the alleged offences occurred while he was in a position of authority as a youth group leader of a Goulburn church group.
He was originally refused bail by police and appeared at Queanbeyan Local Court on March 7.
Here he was remanded to re-appear at Goulburn Local Court on April 11.
In Goulburn Local Court on April 11, he appeared briefly by audio-visual link from Silverwater Jail.
He did not enter pleas to the charges. He remains in custody and police investigations are continuing.
The man has been adjourned to reappear in Goulburn Local Court on June 13.
Meanwhile, a 79-year-old man charged with child sex offences alleged to have occurred while he was an employee of the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn in 1989 is in Queanbeyan Local Court on April 23.
