Brigade information
The Brigade Annual General Meeting was held on Friday, April 13 at the fire station. All positions were declared vacant, but at the time of submitting this article, we hadn't actually held the meeting. Results will be published in the May Towrang Talking column and on the Towrang website – www.towrang.org.
As we are quite sure everyone is aware, a bushfire started on a property on Tarlo River Road on Sunday, March 18. Quick action by members of brigades from near and far contributed greatly to the fast demise of the fire before it got out of hand. An old house, fencing, a collection of car spares and parts and orchard trees were lost, but it could have been a lot worse. Brigades were out on patrol all through the Sunday night, all day Monday, Tuesday until about midnight, Wednesday until 11pm and by then it was all over – a combination of people power, aerial water bombing and cool, misty showers late Wednesday and early Thursday morning made a big difference. Also making a big difference were those residents who had fire prevention measures in place and operational.
Thank you to all who came to help – the various brigades, Tarlo Catering Unit, Coffee 'n' Cream, the locals who turned up to help with catering or to bring food and drinks.
Our thoughts are with the residents of Tathra who faced a similar bushfire situation on the same day with horrific results.
For anyone in the Towrang Brigade footprint, and that means the whole area, not just those from the village, who would like information on how to prepare their property in the event of a bushfire, please come along on a Tuesday night for a chat. The station is open from 7pm. Can't make it Tuesday? Work in Sydney all week and only come down on weekends? Then ring the duty phone (0438 298 271) or send an email to towrangbrigade@gmail.com and we can organise to meet you at the fire station during the weekend.
The NSW RFS Bushfire Danger Period is now at an end. If you would like to start doing some hazard reduction, you no longer need a permit to burn. You do, however, need to ring Yass Fire Control on 6226 3100 during business hours to get your name and details put onto the burn list. This means that you must contact them before Friday if you intend to do hazard reduction over the weekend. Don't forget to contact your neighbours at least 24 hours prior to burning and then text your name and details to the duty phone (0438 429 271) prior to lighting. You also need to have operating firefighting equipment available in case of emergencies and clear within two metres of your burn area. Do use commonsense and don't light up on a windy day. If in doubt, ring the duty phone.
