The team which includes about seven women new to league tag scored a 28 to 10 win over the Gungahlin Bulls’ women.
Gungahlin was first to cross the Goulburn line and convert their try. It did not take long for Claire Hately to put Goulburn’s first four points on the board. Goulburn’s alternate kicker Kate Thompson then made no mistake with her accuracy. Goulburn’s second try by Kayla Gann went unconverted.
The wind even in the 10am time slot was making kicking difficult and the ball was lucky to stay on the tee after it was set by the kickers on both sides.
It became early that if the teams were to maximise on trys they would have to ground the ball between the posts or close to it.
Goulburn Bulldogs took the 10 to 6 lead to the half time break.
Even at the hafway opint it was fairly clear that Goulburn’s fitness was a factor in the run of play. The girls had been training for several weeks alongside the rest of the Bulldogs teams and many of the girls have been playing touch as well during the off season.
Within a few minutes of the restart Goulburn surged furtehr ahead after Sassie Economos crossed the line under the posts to give Amy Day an easier kick for conversion, which she executed with precision. Saddie who was heading to Tuggeranong for Capital League Hockey was immediately after the league tag ran from the field for a short break. the change over was seamless. and Goulburn. After a short excersion back into defence the Bulldogs resumed their strong attack covering each other well and passing the ball ti=o limit the number of successful tag pulls by the Bulls.
Amy Day had scored a try and converted it and converted another from one of her teammates to bring Goulburn’s score to 28.
With a little over a minute left in the second half Gungahlin found a gap in the Goulburn defence and after several missed tag grabs Caitlin Turnbull crossed the line out wide. The conversion attempt looked pretty good, however the gusty wind shifted the ball off target.
The game ended with the final score at 28 to 10.
GWC Bulldogs co-coaches Matt Worboys and Adam Antony both said they were very pleased with the way the women’s league tag team has come together as a unit.
“We are new to the coaching job and we ate thoroughly enjoying it as the girls are working so well together and obviously enjoying playing,” Worboys said. “There is a good mix of new and experience and the more experienced players, about seven of which have been playing for the whole three seasons are keen to encourage the newer players.
“One of Adam Kyle’s aims has been to make the club inclusive and that cultural shift is certainly helping right across the grades.
“The enthusiasm from the girls is amazing and they really listen to us and back each other up.”
