Goulburn Workers Club: Day Out Society – report
Our most recent Sunday trip, with 43 members on board, left Goulburn at 8.30am to travel to the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, arriving just before opening time at 10am. Morning tea was at our own expense at the cafe at the Mint so after indulging in a cuppa and delicious toasted banana bread, we perused the display cases of various coins, which commemorated events in Australia’s history, past and present. The most recent on display were the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games coins, which comprised three coloured $2 coins and four $1 coins, which will not be circulated. Moving on to another display case, we found some delightful pendants, each with 14-carat gold inlaid centres. Some of our members succumbed to the temptation and decided to give them a new home in Goulburn.

From the Mint, we travelled to the Burns Club to partake of a delicious smorgasbord feast followed by a large variety of sweets. After lunch, we did wend our way to the Mount Stromlo Observatory.
As we all know, Canberra is famous for its circular road system, leading to all destinations. We encountered several roads leading to the Observatory, but locked gates prevented our progress. Eventually, after speaking to a pedestrian, we finally arrived at the elusive Observatory. After disembarking, we wandered in and around the Visitors Centre, never to meet any official connected with the building or the cafe, which was locked up and deserted. Maybe the people of authority may have been in the same position as our coachload of passengers and they too may be finding their way to the Mount Stromlo Observatory.
After a lot of laughing at our predicament, we continued our journey home, calling in at north Canberra McDonald’s for a quick cuppa then on to Goulburn where we arrived home safely. A big ‘thank you’ must go to our coach driver Doug, who handled the day extremely well as usual.
The Day Out Society would like to congratulate Pat Maher on being a nominee for the 2018 Goulburn Senior of the Year. Pat served many years as the secretary of the Day Out Society and continues to help wherever possible to this day. – VAL CROKER
