Councillors on Tuesday unanimously decided to give $2594 to the Cancer Council’s annual Relay for Life and $3000 to the Rotary Club of Goulburn to help present the Science and Engineering Challenge. The former will be held on November 3 and 4 and the latter on July 27.
The money will help the Cancer Council with hire fees and associated costs for the use of Eastgrove south cricket fields and hire of Auburn Street banners.
Cr Margaret O’Neill described it as an “outstanding event.”
Cr Peter Walker moved that the council donate $3000 to the Science and Engineering Challenge, rather than the $1000 staff had recommended. The event, run by the University of Newcastle, involves seven high schools in the Goulburn region.
“This will allow them to break even. It’s just an amazing event and well worth us kicking the tin for,” Cr Walker said.

It was once the place where ladies paid five cents to use the bathroom and men paid nothing.
In more recent time the Belmore Park amenities block on the Market Street side has been used as a council storage shed.
Now changes are on the way. The council’s 2018/19 draft budget proposes that the structure be demolished and replaced with a ‘green area,’ complete with trees and seating. The budget was discussed on Tuesday night. It is on public exhibition until May 18.
