For people in our community who have fallen into a cycle of using drugs and alcohol, their fate rests on whether the right detox and rehabilitation facilities are available to them. It can be very difficult to find that small window of opportunity where a person is motivated to take those first steps to get their life back on track. Here in Goulburn, we need to make sure the right services are available and ready to help when this happens.

Unfortunately, outside of major cities, including in Goulburn, it can be even more difficult to find appropriate services at the time they’re needed. Too often, people who have undergone detoxification at the local hospital, at home or a detoxification facility, have to wait for weeks, and in some cases months, to attend rehabilitation facilities. And even then, people are having to travel a long distance to receive these services.
This can result in people choosing to not pursue detox or rehabilitation supports. And if a place is not found in time, the situation can worsen or a person may relapse.
People experiencing substance misuse issues need a safe place for change. There are no detox and rehabilitation services here in Goulburn. So people are expected to travel to a different health district for help, which could be Sydney or even further afield, away from their support networks.
The issues surrounding people in the throes of drug and alcohol dependence are extensive. The knock-on effects on their physical and mental health, their futures and their families, friends and our community are clear. And for too many, their substance misuse concerns can push them into homelessness.
Everyone deserves a chance for a bright future, irrespective of the personal challenges they face. We need to see more investment in the services that work, so people in our community can take control of their own lives, with the support of professional staff and in a safe place for change. It would be great to see a residential rehab facility available for the people of Goulburn and I hope that one day this is a reality for our community.
