“Looking back, it was a lucky escape. I’m standing here and whatever else happens now doesn’t matter,” he told The Post.
The man, aged in his seventies, had just survived a crash on the Federal Highway, some 10km south of Goulburn, near the Hume Highway junction. The accident happened at about 1.40pm Friday.
Travelling north, the female driver of a silver Mitsubishi Pajero lost control after a rear tyre blew out. The vehicle veered slightly left off lane two before straightening and veering over lane one, through an armco railing and dropped down a 10 metre embankment. Police said the car rolled two or three times before landing on its roof.
The four Sydney occupants were able to free themselves. Two men and a woman, all aged in their seventies, walked away without injury. A woman, aged 73, suffered suspected head and neck injuries and was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital by road ambulance.
The two couples had been travelling from Jindabyne.
The RFS also attended the scene.
Skid marks were apparent on the road where the car careered across the road and into the railing. Down below, luggage was strewn across the grass.
“I just heard a big bang, it gave us a shock,” the man said of the tyre blowout.
“I thought it would steady up but it didn’t. The car ended up on its roof and I didn’t think I’d live.”
