The building behind Springfield House at Goulburn Base Hospital is planned to be demolished later this year to accommodate a $120 million redevelopment. Springfield House is also destined for the bulldozer.
Cr Carol James and the Arts and Heritage Group are organising a farewell for Lady Grose House on Friday, May 11 at 6pm. The complex was built in 1938/9, expanding the onsite nurses’ accommodation given the hospital’s growth in admissions.
A heritage report completed by Perumal Murphy Alessi stated that the building was designed by government architects and included 32 single rooms, sitting rooms and associated services. Its estimated cost was £11,500.
“After some delays, the second preferred tenderer, Mr ER Greenfield who had recently constructed the new private wards was awarded the contract,” the study stated.
“The new quarters were officially opened in May, 1939 by Mrs DK Otton, wife of the President of the Hospital’s Commission. The building was described as an ‘imposing addition’ with 32 bedrooms and conveniences built in reinforced concrete and brick and erected close the existing quarters and connected with by a covered “porch-way”. A terrazzo verandah and large glass entry doors were noted.”
Cr James said many people had a long association with the building.
“We’ve invited a lot of the old nurses and doctors who had an association,” she said.
They include Doctors Peter Ragg, Rod McConnell and Geoff Drake.
The night includes an auction of works donated by Sydney artist, Gary Jenkins depicting some of Goulburn’s iconic buildings. Local real estate agent Graeme Welsh will do the honours.
Attendees will also be asked to buy a balloon for $20 to $25, which have prizes and gift vouchers inside.
In addition, patrons will be given a tour of the old building.
All money raised on the night will be used to incorporate heritage items from the demolished buildings in the new complex as part of a story wall and display.
“We’re keeping as much as we can and that’s the reason for fundraising,” Cr James said.
Tickets cost $40 and include finger food and drinks. If anyone is interested in attending, RSVP to Cr James on 4821 5033 by 5pm May 4. Numbers are limited due to the space.
