The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the Southern and Central Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, South Coast and parts of the Illawarra.
Damaging winds averaging between 80 and 90 kilometres per hour, with gusts of up to 125 kilometres per hour, are forecast for areas above 1900 metres.
A frontal system approaching the state may generate the strong gusts, beginning on Thursday afternoon, continuing into Friday.
Winds between 60 and 70 kilometres per hour are also expected to develop in the south on Thursday afternoon.
Residents of areas which may be affected should move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure loose items around their homes and keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines.
The warning was issued at 10:44am on Thursday May 3.
For emergency help call the SES on 132 500.
