Footage shown on 60 Minutes of animal abuse and cruelty in the live export of sheep to the Middle East is disgraceful. Sheep packed so tightly they are unable to move, lay down or get to food and water, struggling to breathe, with temperatures reaching 36 degrees with 95 percent humidity overnight. 2400 animals on board were cooked alive and thrown overboard. The survivors awaited horrific deaths on the other end.

I am disgusted that farmers would put those animals on these ships. I am disgusted at the government for not doing anything. How many more chances will the government give these exporters before they have their licences revoked?
All this government is interested in is how many animals can be shipped off. Unfortunately it won’t matter how many people want the industry shut down, or how many incidents of cruelty we see. This government works for big business, big business that pay millions to support their election campaigns.
In Angus Taylor’s own words ‘activism will never shut down livestock industries on our watch’. I wonder if Mr Taylor has watched the footage shown by 60 Minutes, or does he blindly support an industry like his friend Barnaby Joyce? What hope have animals got with these people running the show.
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said he was horrified by the footage, but did not believe a ban on live exports was the answer. What is the answer? Sixty more years of promises of better animal welfare? Animal welfare will never be a priority under this government.
