I’m a relative newcomer to [the area] but have been trying to keep in touch with how Goulburn Mulwaree Council is planning for its future. I was following the proposal for a new prison in Goulburn with interest.

I’ve moved from a community that is benefitting from a modern prison facility and know the usual NIMBY complaints bear no resemblance to what happens once the prison is in situ and contributing to the community.
When the Cabinet was in Goulburn recently, the Minister completely rejected the proposal because the government had already planned their accommodation needs. So, imagine my surprise to turn on the TV last week to hear about a new gaol proposed for Dapto.
Not only did the politician who fronted the cameras have no idea what it would involve, how big it would be, whether it would be public or private, or how much it would cost, it now turns out Wollongong Council knew nothing about it either! Nor did the Catholic church whose heritage listed cemetery is in the middle of the proposed site! Even the landowners, BlueScope Steel, had not been advised. The NSW Government seems to be clutching at straws on so many fronts.
Why doesn’t Ms Goward tell them there is a perfectly good proposal on the table for Goulburn, supported by the council and local businesses, and ready to go?
