Towards the end of 2017, Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council engaged an arborist that specialises in heritage trees to develop a strategy to protect and preserve the elm trees in the Braidwood Recreation Ground.
The council intends to carry out pruning, removal of dead wood and other remedial work on most of the trees and to plant replacement elms where there are gaps.
It has been recommended that one or two be removed and replaced.
However, this will be staged over an extended period with replacements planted in advance.
As part of a separate project, the council is also working on final designs to extend the sports field and restore the creek.
It is expected elm suckers will be removed as part of the environmental works.
