Just To Be Sure is French romantic comedy at its finest. Unlike Hollywood's syrupy offerings, this movie is intelligent, sharp, wry and witty. It is comedy for adults: a tale that is as light-hearted as is its subject matter is deadly serious.

Erwan (the remarkable Francois Damiens) is a lonely 45-year-old widower. Surly, but generally even-tempered, Erwan is a bomb-disposal expert. He travels around France disarming bombs buried in the Gallic soils since WWII.
His occupation acts as an ironic metaphor for the explosion that he has to deal with in his own personal life which soon resembles a minefield.
Erwan's 23-year-old daughter Juliette (Alice de Lencquesaing) is pregnant and does not know - or care - who the father is. Juliette decides to have a DNA test to determine if her baby is at risk of a genetic disorder carried by Erwan's father.
The DNA test reveals that the man who raised Erwan is not his biological father. So begins Erwan's search for his genetic father.
Thanks to a local private detective Erwan soon locates the mischievous and gregarious, 70-something Joseph (Andre Wilms), whom it seems his mother may have known briefly. Erwan befriends Joseph, engrossed by his charm.
Joseph is reluctant to tell his daughter about this surprise development, just as Erwan can’t bring himself to tell his father (whose late wife presumably cheated on him) what he’s discovered.
Meanwhile, Erwan meets an endearing and impetuous veterinarian, Anna (Cecile De France), who is inept at creating her own life. Anna has ties to both Erwan and Joseph. Erwan soon becomes endeared with Anna. Until he discovers she may be his sister.
The conflicting loyalties become even more compounded when Erwan's daughter refuses to name the father.
Very soon Erwan’s families begin to collide, to unexpected, hilarious and moving effect.
The relationship between Erwan and Juliette is cleverly well-developed by highlighting the juxtaposition between the two. Erwan wanting to find his biological father and Juliette wanting to raise a child without one.
Offering a terrific showcase for her brilliant cast, director Carine Tardieu expertly weaves a wholly-entertaining exploration of love, coincidence and human connection. Francois Damiens as Erwan is superb; his physical presence is understated but powerful.
Few films manage to pluck both the heartstrings and the funny bone as well as Just To Be Sure.
Through its finely-crafted, intricate and lively script serious issues are given a light touch, effortlessly making us laugh about what would normally be a series of tragic events.
A winning tale of parenthood, love and family, both lost and found. It is easy to see why it was chosen as the 'Official Selection' at the 2017 Cannes International Film Festival. It’s sheer delight.
