This Friday night features the Con’s very own woodwind and jazz tutor Ben Jones in The Mod-Day Gents.
If you have ever wondered what would it sound like if the Beatles, Duke Ellington and the Propellerheads ever played together – then this is the gig for you!
It is a fresh new mix of jazz, funk, rock, pop, alternative and electronica all rolled into one.
Ben Jones on double bass, together with Rick Falkiner on guitar have united in a bid to re-contextualise mainstream music in more of a jazz genre.
What has transpired is a unique acoustic collection of pop-rock and jazz. Their distinctive sound is a fusion of electronica and vintage instruments and they play a variety of tunes anywhere from INXS, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones to Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis.
Both Falkiner and Jones are now based in the Southern Highlands and are active in the local community with their music practice, research and teaching commitments.
Falkiner has been a part of the live music scene for many years and has performed at various concerts including: The studio Sydney Opera house, Sydney festival and WomAdelaide with Nadia Golski and the 101 candles orchestra and An Evening of Australian Guitars at the Australian Embassy Tokyo with Slava Grigoryan.
He has also been involved in many television and radio productions.
Bassist, reedman and vocalist Ben Jones has played and recorded with some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians including; Tom Baker, Bob and Len Barnard, Geoff Bull, Col Nolan, Janet Seidel, Monica and The Moochers, Don Burrows and James Morrison.
He has played at most major Jazz festivals and venues around the country, being a featured artist at the Manly, Thredbo, Wangaratta, Wagga, Noosa and Newcastle festivals, and is the patron of the Dubbo Jazz Festival.
The Mod-Day Gents uses cutting edge music technology juxtaposed with traditional methods and music improvisation.
The spontaneity of each performance is very engaging and helps the audience to delve into the music’s energy, making it quite an experience to sit back, relax and listen to.
Catch the Mod-Day Gents in the Old Ceramics Room at the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, 160 Bourke Street, Goulburn this Friday, May 25, from 7:30pm.
Tickets are adults $20, concession/members $15 and children $10.
