Tom Toparis’ Top 20 finish

Goulburn‘s very own Tom Toparis has raced to a nineteenth place finish overnight at the fifth round of the highly touted FIM Supersport 300 World Championship at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic.

In typical Toparis fashion, the 18-year-old started the weekend off slowly by simply finding his feet and getting to grips, in what were previously uncharted waters for the young rider.

This fact was proven by his lap times throughout the weekend, which saw him posting a 2min 22.792 in Free Practice One on Friday morning, before he lowered his time by 1.245 seconds in the afternoon’s second Free Practice session with a 2min 21.547.

Toparis managed to improve his times again, this time in Superpole One, after he guided the number three Motoport Kawasaki machine to a 2min 20.046, which was good enough for twenty-fifth position on the grid out of a total of thirty-nine bikes.

In a scheduled ten lap race, which was cut to seven, due to a rider who crashed, Toparis made his way from twenty-fifth to twenty-third by lap four.

This was a solid effort considering he was ‘punted’ at the start of the of the race heading into turn one.

Toparis made his way to nineteenth place until the red flag was brought out.

All in all, it was a remarkable weekend for the Trinity Catholic College student, after his times dropped in every session.

However, it was simply a case of not enough time to learn everything.

In total, Toparis managed to get in twenty-two laps across both practice sessions, then a further six in Superpole One and four in Sunday’s morning warm up before the lights went out for the race.

So, considering all of this, the Goulburn star did a mighty fine job.

Toparis will now turn his attention to the fourth round of the Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), with the series heading to Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway on June 29 – July 1, which sees him sitting in second place in the Australian Supersport Championship.
