It is undertaking a Recreational Needs Strategy examining recreational land around the region, as part of its strategic planning program.
The strategy aims to bring forward recommendations to include provisions in the council’s Development Control Plan for open space in new developments.
Mayor Bob Kirk said the strategy was timely given increasing development in Goulburn and around the region.
“The goal of this work is to ensure our community and each suburb has good access to appropriate open spaces and recreation facilities,” he said.
“We also want to be able to provide clear provisions for open space in new development which will mean we can maintain the character of this great region.”
The strategy will also provide Council with clear data that will support future grant funding applications for open space such as the Riverside Park at Marys Mount.
Purdon Planning has been appointed to undertake the strategy. The consultants will begin with a three-week desktop audit of existing recreation facilities and open spaces in Goulburn and surrounding areas.
The council and Purdon Planning will engage with key stakeholders during preparation of the draft strategy. This is expected to be completed for community consultation in October, before a final report is prepared for the council’s consideration before the end of the year.
General manager Warwick Bennett the council was interested in any ideas and the process would include public meetings, open days and engagement with groups such as the Mount Gray precinct users and those utilising Victoria Park.
