The fundraiser was initially supposed to take place last weekend, on July 7, however some extremely inclement weather meant that the event was washed out and a (literal) rain check was necessary.
However, weather permitting July 21 will now feature some skilful hockey matches played by athletes sporting bright pink socks in support of the cause.
Crookwell Hockey president, Kathy Robertson, said that the support from the community has remained steadfast, despite troubles with the weather.
“Not really, it’s always a good foundation that one,” Robertson said.
“The community is always pretty good for things like that.”
In fact, the response to this first fundraising event has been so strong that the Crookwell Hockey committee has decided to hold a similar fundraiser every year.
“We thought we’d do one every year now,” Robertson said.
“[Because] it’s gone so well so far. So we’re gonna do it as an annual one and keep it going, just pick a [different] foundation every year and just do something like that.”
This year’s event will feature six teams from Crookwell, who will come together for the day to compete against each other and raise awareness and support for the McGrath Foundation.
The committee has been selling pink socks in the lead-up to the event, and has already raised $900 in support of the cause just from these sales alone.
The idea for the fundraiser came about, Robertson explained, through Crookwell Hockey’s search for a fundraiser.
“We’d never seen one for Sporting Socks before,” she said.
“So we decided to do that one and all teams would buy the socks and have a barbecue on the day and wear the socks.”
The socks were custom made for the event, and Robertson said that the committee is hopeful that they will continue to run with the custom sock theme each year for each different fundraiser.
There will be several gimmicks on the day which will help contribute towards the overall total raised.
Aside from the sales of the socks, there will be small fines for indiscretions on the field which will go towards the total, and a barbecue will be held at the conclusion of the matches which will also raise funds.
Robertson also extended her gratitude to the local businesses who donated their goods to make the barbecue possible.
Crookwell Hockey’s McGrath Foundation fundraising day will take place on Saturday July 21 at Jean Todkill Park. The club encourages anybody interested to come along.
