Owner and qualified Pilates instructor Maria Vassallo spoke with Goulburn Post about the ins and outs of her business.
Nominated for: Start Up Superstar
GP: How long has your business been operating?
MV: I started the M Pilates studio in October 2017 after completing my Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction through Pilates International Training College (Canberra and Sydney) and gained my nationally accredited certification to instruct clients on Pilates equipment.
I am also a member of the Pilates Alliance Australasia, so you can be sure you are in qualified hands. I have been teaching Pilates mat classes in various community locations in Goulburn since August 2016.
GP: What is the purpose of your business?
MV: The purpose of Pilates is help everyone move happy, live pain free and achieve the best version of their body possible. So, I suppose that is why I teach Pilates in the M Pilates studio, which is a fully equipped Pilates studio located within a private room at Absolute Fitness gym on Lansdowne street in Goulburn.
You have the opportunity to practise in a friendly comfortable environment, with personalised attention and focusing on your individual needs. Private Pilates sessions, small group sessions up to four people, equipment classes, as well as Pilates mat classes are offered to clients seeking a form of movement to prevent injury and manage existing injuries. It is suitable for all life stages, from the young through to the elderly, to maintain a supple body and quality of life.
GP: What does this nomination mean to you and your business?
MV: I was completely overwhelmed when I found out I was nominated. I love what I do and seeing my clients benefit from Pilates. So to be nominated and recognised among all the other great businesses in town is an honour. The nomination provides exposure for my new, small business and a platform through the Chamber of Commerce to reach more people within the local area and surrounding districts. The more people moving happy and better through life is a positive thing.

GP: How many staff members do you have and what do they do?
MV: At the moment, I am M Pilates! I instruct, program, and teach Pilates. Then there is administration and housekeeping which involves keeping equipment clean and running smoothly. Although I work alone, I have had some amazing help and support along the way. My daughter Natalie, a design student at UNSW, designed my logo and colours, which I love. She also has helped with my website and social media content. My other daughter Caitlyn, has taken some fantastic photos I have used in my ads. Other friends have helped with moving equipment and setting up the studio. I would be lost without their help – thank you.
GP: What is the secret to your success?
MV: My clients who trust me to instruct them to improve their body and life. I have the best clients – thank you guys you really are the best! Every body is different, therefore, individual, personalised attention and instruction is crucial to ensure people are getting the best quality Pilates instruction. I treat each client individually and keep my classes small.
I continually undergo further education to keep up-to-date with new findings so that I can better instruct my clients. Keeping it fun and lighthearted is so important – I can confidently say my clients always leave the studio with a smile.
GP: What is something not many people would know about your business?
MV: I am often asked - what is Pilates and who can do it? Pilates is a full body workout that focuses on recruiting deep muscles to support the body with an emphasis on correct muscles working which in turn means the body moves efficiently without compensation.
Pilates will help you build strength from the inside out, reducing pain and retraining lazy muscles and movement patterns. It can be performed on the floor or on a variety of machines using springs as resistance.
So who can do Pilates? The answer is simple – everyone. Pilates really can benefit everybody, but like all forms of exercise, not everyone will love it as much as I do. I have experience working with a wide range of clients, including rehabilitation clients, sports professionals, men, mothers, mature clients and dancers and gymnasts.
