Although we haven’t heard much of him lately, he’s been pretty busy.
“I haven’t done many gigs and I haven’t been out on the road lately. I made a decision a few years ago to stop touring and put my energy into other things. I’ve got young kids I’ve got to take care of,” Mr Greene said.
“In that time, I started a company called Sounds Delicious where I do dinners and shows. I try to create a beautiful environment for the performer and the audience and I also cook. It’s a new passion I’ve been able to work on.”
I had to stop playing because my technique was causing my hip to go out of alignment
- Paul Greene
Mr Greene is a former athlete who competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the 4 x 400m relay.
He played too much guitar to the point where he was forced to give up the instrument.
“I was playing music in the Olympic village and entertaining other athletes,” he said.
“I had to stop playing because my technique was causing my hip to go out of alignment.
“Alcohol and fatty foods, no problems, but giving up playing guitar was difficult.”
Not being interested in running combined with an offer too good to refuse made him retire from athletics not long before the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
“Running was fairly boring. I did a lot of travelling, but didn’t get to be a tourist. I spent a lot of time in the hotel waiting for a competition or something. I retired just before the 2000 Olympics when Rob Hirst from Midnight Oil asked me to play in his band,” he said.
If there’s one thing the former Olympian took from his sporting career into his music career, it’s that you have to concentrate on yourself.
“You can’t worry about what’s happening in someone else’s lane. You’ve got to run your own race,” he said.
The musician who idolises Cathy Freeman feels gigs “are like catching up with friends”.
Mr Greene has a few songs up his sleeve to perform tonight, but his main aim is to entertain the crowd.
“I’ve got a bunch of new songs that I’m very keen to play. However, I will play whatever people want me to play. I’m there to entertain them and for everyone to have a good time,” he said.
You can catch him at the Southern Railway Hotel tonight from 8:30 pm.
