While participating in sport is often a great way to stay fit and healthy, research has shown that those who play sports with a racquet, such as tennis, are healthier than any other.
An international research collaboration led by University of Sydney found that the most life-saving benefits were offered by racquet sports (tennis, squash and badminton).
Compared with study participants who did anything other than one of these, they found racquet sports gave a 47 percent lower risk of death from any cause.
This was way clear of the other placegetters – which are all still good for you – and they were swimming (28 percent lower risk), aerobics (27 percent lower risk) and cycling (15 percent lower risk).
The reduction to the risk of death from cardiovascular disease offered by racquet sports was even greater, being 56 percent (followed again by swimming and aerobics with pretty good results too).
Kids to seniors, tennis truly is a sport for all
- Ridland's Tennis
WHY IS IT SO?
We can suggest why tennis and other racquet sports would be so good for you.
The folks at Ridland’s Tennis here in Goulburn say “Playing tennis won’t just help you stay fit and keep you in shape, it also gets you socialising and having fun.”
From an exercise viewpoint, sports like tennis motivate you to spend some time putting in regular bursts of effort trying to win rallies, a pattern that is similar to high-intensity interval training which is known to be quite beneficial.
As Ridland’s Tennis pointed out, it is also quite social – whether you enter competitions or just play with your local club for fun – and fulfilling your needs for social activity has a positive influence on your mental health.

TOURNAMENT
Goulburn Tennis Club is hosting an Australian Money Tournament (AMT) from October 6 to 8. “This event will attract AMT players from far and wide.
“Whilst this is an AMT, there will also be plenty of events for locals both adult and juniors to join in. Specials, B grade, under 14s, under 10s, singles, doubles and mixed doubles can all be entered. We look forward to seeing plenty of local support at this event. [It] will be the strongest Goulburn has seen since the ’70s.”
