While none of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs rugby league teams brought home premiership trophies this season the club still had plenty to celebrate in the way its players performed in the Canberra Region Rugby League Competition. Also noticeable at the presentation night on Saturday, was the way the Bulldogs have developed as a united family friendly group.
Head coach Adam Kyle said when he introduced himself to the club at the beginning of the year that he wanted to improve the culture and inclusiveness of the Bulldogs and it was obvious from the gathering on Saturday night he had really brought the club a long way forward. Most of this season’s players have expressed a desire to return in 2019 and the the management has secured the willing services of two more players who have played with clubs in the NRL. James Aubusson has also indicated his return next season after enjoying his game time this year.
In his address to the gathering at the presentation Adam Kyle said it was disappointing that the first grade team was not able to string many wins together this season and were plagued by injuries. but the younger players had showed plenty of determination in stepping up to fill the boots in the higher ranks.
“Our aim in 2019 is to win trophies and winning games is all I will accept, losing is not good enough,” he said.
He said the club now has a positive vibe and with the addition of a couple of experienced committed players and the signing now of 70 per cent of the players it was looking good and he was looking forward to coaching the club in 2019.
There were numerous players and others surprised to receive award on Saturday nigh but none more suprised than the two recipients of the Services to Rugby League and the Bulldogs Club. Bruce Bugden who runs the barbecue and is there for every game day setting up early and helping out where he can was the first announced. The club player, whose wife realised before he did that they were talking about him was all round nice guy and recipient of the sole 150 game players mug this year,Tim Costello.
Mitch Atkinson and Issac Lanham shared the Tim Hartnett Memorial Rising Star Award.
