Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service reptile coordinator Gary Pattinson says snakes won’t attack unless under threat.
“If you leave it alone, it will leave you alone,” Mr Pattinson said.
“It only attacks if it feels it is being threatened, but generally, they become defensive when approached.”
“If you see a snake on your property, take a photo of it and send it in to WIRES or one of your Wildlife conversation groups to find out what it is.
“Enjoy it, but leave it alone.”
If you do get bitten by a snake, the pressure and immobilisation first aid procedure will save your life.
“Wrap a broad pressure bandage quite firmly from the tip of the bitten limb right up to the torso and keep the patient very still,” he said.
“Call an ambulance immediately.”
If you find a snake inside your home, contact WIRES on 1300 094 737 and they will send someone to safely remove it.
