That’s how the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs will line up next season: Mitchell and Nick Cornish in the halves and Tyler at fullback.
The Bulldogs have struggled in recent seasons, so Mitchell has a goal in mind.
“I know the team haven’t made finals for a while, so I want to change that,” he said.
The Cornish brothers are all great talents and should be a formidable attack against any side they come up against.
Having played 15 games for the Canberra Raiders and five for the Sydney Roosters, Mitchell is probably the better-known brother.
Tyler has played one game for the Gold Coast Titans, while Nick is yet to make his mark in the NRL.
A grubber kick off Raider Josh Hodgson gave Mitchell his only try in the NRL, while a long ball from Titan Kane Elgey gave Tyler his only try.
Mitchell has a title to his name already after winning the 2016 Auckland Nines with the Paramatta Eels.
“It was a good brand of footy,” he said. “It was attacking, fast, and all the things that outside backs like, so it was good fun to be part of.”
He could have won a second one with the Roosters, but family came first for him.
“I was meant to play for the Roosters, but my wife was giving birth to our second child,” he said.
But playing for the Raiders also allowed Mitchell to be mentored by a great of the game, Ricky Stuart.
“Ricky taught me to back myself,” Mitchell said.
“He played in my position at halfback, [where they have] to really back themselves and take control of games. He also taught me to boss some big fellas around.”
A game Mitchell will never forget is one against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in round 18 of the 2017 season: “I remember every time I kicked the ball in that game, the forward pack was just belting me afterwards.”
Mitchell and Tyler will be eagerly watching the NRL finals this weekend.
Tyler said he didn’t see an upset coming. A “Roosters and Storm grand final,” he predicted. “You can’t write either of them off.”
And you certainly can’t write off the Cornish brothers, either.
In 2019, watch them run with the pack – and watch out as they bite!
