He’s dreamed of being a striker for Arsenal Football Club.
Thank god the dreams didn’t eventuate, because he became a damn good singer.
Aled Jones MBE is a household name, especially to the older generation, and he is coming to Goulburn.
The famous singer, along with his 13-year-old son Lucas, will be performing at St Saviour’s Cathedral on Thursday September 27 at 6pm.
The 47-year-old has been singing his whole life due to Welsh culture and after joining a choir, it became embedded in him.
“In Wales, you are always encouraged to sing at schools," Mr Jones said.
“In every lesson, you’d have a guitar coming out and the whole class would sing.
“I started singing when I joined a cathedral choir in North Wales and then it wasn’t just a hobby, but a way of life.”
The radio and television presenter will be singing songs from his latest album One Voice: Believe and did something no one ever did before.
He found an unreleased album from his days as a boy soprano and decided to make One Voice, which consists of songs from the unreleased album sung as a duet with his young self.
“The whole idea behind One Voice is that it’s one person singing,” he said.
“We made history as no one had an album where the same person had sung with two different voices.”
This is the 10th time he has been to Australia, but it is the first time he has toured in regional areas.
However, he is no stranger to regional areas in Wales as he hosts the show Escape To The Country, which airs in Australia and said the country side in Australia and Wales are similar.
“On the journey I’ve made all the way from Sydney up to Brisbane, I’ve noticed the country side is very much like Wales.”
In the hymn The Lord Is My Shepherd just before the finale, he will perform with his son in a duet and every time he performs with him, “it’s a teary-eyed moment”.
“Lucas doesn’t have lessons,” he said.
“His voice is about to change so he wants to give singing a go before it happens.
“When I hear his voice coming through, I just beam with pride.”
The star has received a lot of praise in his concerts so far and is flattered.
“The reaction in Australia has been amazing,” he said.
“We’ve done five concerts so far and it’s gone so well.
“We got five standing ovations and they’ve also been packed houses.”
- Tickets start from $53.50 and can be bought by calling 1300 303 103. Doors open at 6pm for a 7pm start.
