It is a day where members of the NSW Police Force and the community remember those officers who have given their lives in the course of their duties.

This years’ service will be held on Friday, September 28 at the NSW Police Wall of Remembrance in the Domain, Sydney, as well as other locations across the nation, and the South West Pacific region.

In remembering our fallen officers from the NSW Police Force, we also remember fallen officers from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. 

NPRD remembers both sworn and unsworn members of the NSW Police Force who lost their lives through illness, accident or other circumstances in the previous 12 months.

National Police Remembrance Day is observed on the feast day for Saint Michael the Archangel, patron saint of police. St Michael is recognised as an archangel by the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths. 

National Police Remembrance Day was first held in 1989, as a result of a joint decision at the 1988 Australasia and South West Pacific Region Commissioner’s Conference. 

In February 1999, the Premier of NSW, the Hon. Bob Carr, MP, announced the state government would fund the construction of a memorial to honour the memory of police officers who died serving the community. On December 5, 1999, Mr Carr officially unveiled the Wall of Remembrance. The wall is located to the southern side of the NSW Art Gallery on Art Gallery Road, in the Domain, Sydney. 

In 2006 the National Police Memorial was officially opened in Canberra on September 29. The memorial pays tribute to Australian police officers who have been killed on duty or have died as a result of their duties since the advent of policing in Australia. Importantly, the memorial recognises the unique nature of police service and the dangers that police face in their daily duties.
