“Everyone on my mum’s side of the family [is a] musician,” the Bowral boy said.
“I grew up watching them [perform] live all the time, ever since I was really young.
“They inspired and motivated me to keep carrying on the tradition.”
Murray realised he had a talent for music when he also found how much he loved it.
“When I was younger, I would pick up different instruments and just try them out,” Murray said.
“That’s how I became a multi-instrumentalist.
“I got drum lessons, which were pretty fun, and then I was learning bass and guitar.
“I was learning more and more about music.
“My parents saw the dedication and passion I had for music.
“And that’s when I realised I was good at it, because I loved it so much.”
– Angus Murray
Although he enjoys singing covers of songs, Murray’s original songs are second-to-none because of his ease in writing lyrics.
“I just kind of write how I feel and make the phrasing fit,” he said.
“I come up with the music first and I shift the words and lyrics to the music.”
While he isn’t a fan of his voice, Murray is pleased that other people are. “I hate it when I listen back to my own voice!” he said.
“I’ve got so many people that like what I do, so there’s got to be some value in it, but I don’t always see it.”
The singer-songwriter says his biggest achievement to date is releasing his first solo EP, Shelter.
He is humble when it comes to what he hopes to accomplish in the future. “I just want to be successful,” he said. “I don’t want to be famous or anything like that. I want people to like my music and enjoy it.”
Head to the free show, Southern Railway Hotel, Friday October 12, 8.30pm.
Murray will perform his original songs as well as covers from classic ‘60s Beatles to modern rock gods, INXS.
