Local artist and member of the Goulburn & District Art Society Stavros Papantoniou, an art teacher of many years, took the First prize in three sections – acrylics, miniatures and members only – plus a Second Prize in oils.
With 323 paintings submitted by 87 artists from NSW, ACT, Queensland and Victoria the Annual Art Prize has become by far the biggest and one of the most important art exhibitions in our region.
The main sponsor is the Goulburn Workers Club without who the exhibition could not be of this size. As always, all the art was for sale.
The exhibition is organised and run by the Goulburn & District Art Society (GDAS) and last Thursday night’s opening displayed the fruits of the art society’s hard work.
Gouburn Mulwaree Mayor Bob Kirk said at the official opening that he recognised the society’s important role, the size of the exhibition and the high quality of the paintings on display.
The judge, well-known Newcastle artist and retired Professor of Fine Arts at UWS, Ron Dunsire, gave an entertaining and informative speech during his presentation of the numerous prizes through the eight sections.
He even had the audience participate in a mind simulation to experience imaginative art scenes and creation.
He stressed the importance of imagination and creativity in art along with the essential drawing skills and practice, practice, practice.
With so many works to judge from, Ron had a difficult task to select the prize winners and commendations in each section as well as the overall winner of the Art Prize, which was awarded to Ann Rayment (not present) from Leeton, with her work “7.45 to the City” which stood out in the judges estimation.
She was also the the winner of the ‘other media’ section.
The judge commented on how he became increasingly hard in his assessment of Stavros’ works because they fitted what he expects in art – yet there were so many other very good entries.
Other GDAS prize and commendation winners included Saggu Sukhvinder, Aina Atkins, Glenda Conliffe, Marion Schumacher and Kath Hogan.
Noelene Millar from Nora Head was awarded a First and Second prize.
Other winners were from Taralga, Braidwood, Newbridge, Bathurst, Springwood, Mogo, Farmborough Heights, Canberra, Castlereagh, North Nowra and Batemans Bay.
Goulburn Post reporter Darryl Fernance judged the photographic section on Wednesday. The awards were presented on his behalf.
Th exhibition continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday (October 12 to 14) at the Goulburn Workers Club Auditorium from 10-4pm.
