After the launch of the Certificate III in Fitness (Gym Instructor) course in Goulburn, Canberra Institute of Technology has just commenced the follow-on Certificate IV in Fitness (Personal Trainer).
Sid Burgess, head of Sport and Fitness at CIT, says that the pilot Cert III course for Goulburn students went well and now the Cert IV course has been introduced, along with another opportunity to do Cert III (which is a prerequisite for Cert IV).
“We’re rolling out the Cert IV now, because the Cert III was a success. What we did, and what we tested up there [in Goulburn] was very good” he said.
“The feedback from the students was [it was a] good learning experience that was integrated in the industry, throughout assistance from some gyms [in Goulburn]. They did some work at Absolute and they went out to F45 and got some experience there.”
The courses have just started this week, but if you still want to get in you can enrol right now, and Mr Burgess says they’ll be able to catch you up with what you’ve missed in week one.
If everything goes to plan, CIT are also hoping to continue offering these courses in future semesters, so keep them in mind for the beginning of next year if you’re not looking to start right now.

The courses run for nine weeks each, and they are a mixture of classroom time as well as practical training and assessments via work experience placements.
The classes are held at Workspace2580. “They’ve been great with their support. We’ve got the computer lab there.”
If you’re already a gym instructor your work placement can simply be where you’re working now. If not, CIT can help you with finding a suitable placement.
“Cert IV would be ideal for someone that’s already in the industry with a Cert III, [however] there’s no prerequisite to be in the industry. You just have to have that Cert III [to start Cert IV].”
They’re also going to be trialling a new smartphone app called My Profiling. It’s something many of CIT’s apprentices use to record their workplace training, and CIT are introducing it for the vocational aspect of these fitness courses.
“You have your workplace tasks for the day and you have your workplace supervisor tick it off that it was done and we, for the practical stuff, come out and do a capstone assessment with a qualified trainer and assessor.”
The teachers for these courses are Goulburn-based as well, and they also send some of the specialist assessors from the ACT.
Interestingly, “we’ll always be looking for locally-based teachers that have got qualifications”.
