An internationally inspired theatre festival and conference will be held in Goulburn this weekend. ‘Periphery’ aims to bring people together to share, discuss, and connect through community theatre for social change.
The festival is a collaboration between Polish theatre company Teatr Brama and the Goulburn Lieder Theatre Company, and explores the learnings from a European funded, four year project, ‘Caravan Next’ which used theatre as a tool for social change.
“‘Caravan Next’ really asks us to think in a positive way that we really are all a community of souls and that sharing culture and ways of life can help integration,” Lieder artistic director ChrisJohn Hancock said.
“The project used theatre for change and connectivity. Art and theatre were used to promote community empowerment. ‘Caravan Next’ rethinks theatre as a process of meeting and exchange.”
Teatr Brama are based in Goleniow Poland, which has a population of around 25,000 people.
“Teatr Brama was established 20 years ago as a community theatre company and became a magnet for disengaged people who loved theatre,” Mr Hancock said.
“‘Periphery’ will focus on the learnings from ‘Caravan Next’. The project primarily aims at breaking down barriers, and focuses on the exchange of ideas.”
The weekend event offers a panel discussion on social community theatre, a masterclass with Teatr Brama, ‘10 slides in 10 minutes’ - presentations from Arts organisations in the region, ‘Pitch open Mic’ which is open to the public to present a three-minute pitch about the current or future projects, and closing remarks on the festival.
For those who enjoy live theatre there will be three live productions. These include the award winning ‘Monochrome’, Teatr Brama’s ‘Ghost Dance Impressions’ and, finally, a collaboration between the Lieder and Teatr Brama, ‘Periphery’.
Teatr Brama could’ve chosen anywhere in Australia to share their learnings from ‘Caravan Next’ but chose Goulburn. Anyone interested in theatre for social change, the arts, or who works with people in marginalised settings may benefit from the weekend festival and conference.
