On the October long weekend in 2019, Taralga will celebrate it’s bicentenary. It will be 200 years since Charles Throsby first came through the locality in search of a way to Bathurst.
Planning is underway to celebrate the bicentenary of this significant event for our little village with entertainment and many attractions to be held over the long weekend in October 2019. Every organisation in Taralga is involved in contributing to the festivities. A steering committee, made up of representatives from each organisation, is meeting monthly to put together a fitting celebration. We are aiming at all sections of the community to contribute to the event. We will use many forms of media to advertise the functions to encourage visitors from all over Australia to the event and hope to attract more than3000 spectators over this weekend.
We intend to showcase Taralga’s rural community lifestyle and show what a fantastic place it is to visit with the family. By involving all of Taralga’s organisations and businesses we hope to make it a commercial success so that it can become an annual event.
Taralga has a rich heritage. There is much for visitors to see and do.
The highlight of the weekend will be the street parade on Sunday, October 6. The theme will emphasise life in Taralga over the ages. For instance the Red Cross which has been operating for over 75 years, will enter a float with uniforms from past eras.
A country fair will be held, with events like tug o’war, egg and spoon race and many novelty events. It will be a family atmosphere with people encouraged to dress in period costume. There will also be the Taralga Gift, a winner takes all sprint race that already has significant sponsorship.
Saturday night will see an old time dance begin proceedings, then homegrown band The Corbys will finish off.
The Taralga Historical Museum will be open all weekend to visitors and “Hop On, Hop Off´ buses will provide tours of the town and immediate local area for a small one off fee. Any surplus proceeds generated during the event by the organising committee will be donated back to not for profit organisations in the town.
OUR MAYOR
Congratulations to former Deputy Mayor of Upper Lachlan Shire Councillor, John Stafford, who is now the Mayor. Over the years the village has had many men take the leading position in the Mulwaree Shire. The last man to lead the Council was Paul Stephenson who was on the council from 1994 until 2004. JJ Walsh was the first candidate to lead the shire while he was followed by George Goodhew, Tom Burge, C Bradbury, Donald Baxter, Alec Peden, Bill Hannaford and Laurie Sadlier
GARDEN CLUB TOUR
Jackie would like to remind members that the bus will leave The Club at 7am next Friday, picking up in Goulburn half an hour later. Jackie would also remind members that morning tea supplies would be appreciated. There are 32 members booked for the trip.
LEST WE FORGET
On Saturday Taralga Parish was represented by Ken Fleming at the service held in St Saviours Cathedral in memory of those killed in WW1 from the Canberra/Goulburn Diocese. It is now 100 years since that war ended. As part of the ceremony Ken lit a candle for all the servicemen and women from Taralga.
