The council has enlisted South Australian company Rage Cage Pty Ltd to build a multi-purpose sporting playground. Councillors accepted the $188,881 tender for its design and construction at their most recent meeting.
Operations director Matt O’Rourke said the facility would be located next to the existing adventure playground.
It could include a range of sports including basketball, soccer, handball, cricket, netball and other hard surface sports. The complex will essentially be a concrete slab with a ‘cage around it.’
The council secured grant funding for the playground. Mr O’Rourke said as the cost was below the grant, the playing surface could be extended by seven metres and incorporate additional activities such as rock climbing walls, exercise equipment, hoops and seating.
Councillors decided to use the balance of funds for lighting. Overall construction is expected to take three months.
Mr O’Rourke said the idea emerged during working party discussions for the Victoria Park master plan.
“The next thing is the whole discussion on implementing the master plan,” he said.
“There are about 20 or 30 things in that, including fencing, irrigation, gardens, seating, shade and landscaping, so the council has to get a handle on the timing.”
The facility will add to the planned aquatic centre upgrade, a proposed Japanese garden and skatepark extension and new Seiffert Oval pavilion in the precinct.
Also at Tuesday night’s meeting, councillors agreed to pay the $7500 cost of travel and expenses to bring a Japanese garden expert from Goulburn’s sister-city, Shibetsu, to design the addition. An interpreter and Shibetsu Council representative are expected to accompany the person.
It’s proposed to locate the garden in and around the existing pond.
