Cranston, who represented Australia at this year’s Commonwealth Games and was recently inducted into the Goulburn Sporting Hall of Fame, stayed for the entire meet and spent his time talking to and taking photos with the children.
“He just told them about how he started,” Goulburn Mulwaree Little Athletics president Kerrie Laurie said.
“He was just encouraging the kids and telling them it’s not always where you start, it’s where you finish.”
She added that he was “really good with the kids.”
“He was there for the whole meet, he arrived at a quarter to five when we were setting up and didn’t leave until after we were finished.
“The kids were very impressed.”
The visit was instigated by Cranston’s father, Rod, who called Laurie and said that his son was in town and interested in coming along and meeting the children.
“That’s where he started, he was a little athlete in Goulburn,” Laurie said.
Little Athletics meets are held every Thursday afternoon from 4.45pm. For more information, visit http://gmlac.org.au.
