Branch president Maryke Archbold-Hession said she approached Bong Bong organisers about the CWA sponsoring entry to the races for farmers when she was given the idea to take it a step further.
“We approached Bong Bong to purchase tickets and they thought it was a great idea and said why don’t we set up a farmer’s tent?” Ms Archbold-Hession said.
The CWA ladies will cater morning tea, lunch and afternoon for the farmers on race day, while other events and activities throughout the day will continue to explore farmers contributions to the Southern Highlands.
Bong Bong committee member Suzannah Cowley said the partnership with the CWA was a “natural fit”.
“We came up with the idea of acknowledging the work the CWA has been doing, not only in our area, but across NSW throughout the drought. For farmers, it’s a day off from that daily grind,” Ms Cowley said.
“The drought has been a chance to reintroduce ourselves to the farming community in our area. We didn’t want it to be a drought appeal, we want it to be about celebrating the contributions our farmers make,” she said.
Ms Cowley encouraged people to shop local as they make their preparations for the races on November 23.
“We encourage people to shop local where they can, if you’re going to get frocked up or you’re ordering catering, try and support local businesses.”
