Emergency services were alerted to the blaze beside the Hume northbound lane, some 15km north of Goulburn shortly after 3pm.
They found a vehicle engulfed in flames. The occupant had managed to escape and no one was injured, NSW Ambulance confirmed.
The blaze, near Narambulla Creek spread onto adjoining land.
RFS operations officer Daniel Osborne said it spread west of the highway but crews had contained it at two hectares.
Four crews, including two from Marulan and two from Goulburn Support brigades attended.
“It was burning up-slope and pretty quickly but the crews have got around it and contained it,” Mr Osborne said.
A section of the highway’s northbound lane has been closed to allow firefighting.
The cause of the vehicle fire is not known at this stage.
