Organiser of the mixed competition, Sophie Broadhead, said that attendance was as strong as it has been for the last few years, and added that all of the participants were enjoying themselves and the opportunity to get together for some social sport during the week.
This year marks a special year for Goulburn, as it is set to host the Southern Suns selection trials.
The Southern Suns is both the name given to the tournament and the representative teams for which the players will be able to earn selection.
The trials will see hundreds of touch football players descend on Carr Confoy to try their luck at earning selection in representative teams, which will play in the NSW Touch Association Junior Regional Championships.
The trials will require the touch association to make use of the additional space at the rear of Carr Confoy, which is rarely used in the local touch competition.
The trials will feature players from Under 8’s (for the first time) all the way through to Under 18’s.
“It’ll be a pretty big tournament,” Broadhead said.
“Council’s just given us some more fields, so they’re getting set up at the moment … I don’t know numbers but it will be big.”
Some divisions are expected to have as many as ten teams entered, and Goulburn is set to have a strong presence in the trials, with juniors currently being selected for the Goulburn sides.
The Goulburn teams which are selected could go a long way in touch football, Broadhead said, due to their strong fundamentals and the sheer depth of sporting talent within the town.
“Kids have a lot of the good fundamentals and basics there,” she said.
“It’s just getting trying to get them involved in the rep side and to come through and get the quality coaching as well, which will help them develop.
“We have a lot of talent, but it’s capitalising on that talent [which is the goal].”
The Southern Suns rep trials will take place on Sunday February 3 at Carr Confoy.
The trials will be followed by the 2019 NSW State Cup Southern Conference from February 22 -24.
We have a lot of talent, but it’s capitalising on that talent [which is the goal].
