Radio Goulburn 2GN/Eagle FM has been the collection and drop off point for the annual Christmas giving appeal for decades. Before the radio station moved to the corner of Lagoon and Union Streets it was in the glass and aluminium building in McKell Place.
Goulburn and district residents dropped in with toys and non perishable groceries which were placed under the tree in the front reception area. The Lions Club acts to fairly distribute the goods to the various charities, who in turn distribute the goods to people on their list who need assistance at Christmas.
On Friday, Goulburn City Lions shared out well over $2000 worth of goods and Christmas hampers to the Salvation Army, Anglicare, St Vincent de Paul, Can Assist and the Red Cross.
While they were at the radio station, one of the regular contributors to the appeal, Dorothy McCabe popped in with some last minute knitted goods she had hand crafted.
The Lions Club of Goulburn City is also running its Christmas car raffle with tickets reasonably priced at $10 each. This is the club’s main fundraiser each year and proceeds help to fund the many Lions Club projects including help for the Goulburn Hospital and Health Service, along with many other local charities, like Convoy for Kids and Legacy.
Unfortunately ticket sales this year have been very slow and with only a few days to Christmas there will not be much left in the pot after they cover expenses.
Lions President Bill Starr thought there was shortage of money around this Christmas, and said they had not seen many out of town people digging into their pockets like they have in years previous.
He urged people who were looking for a gift for friends, family or even the secret Santa present to consider a ticket in the car raffle.
First prize is a car valued at $25,000 – a Suzuki Vitara or vehicle of own choice to the value of $25,000 supplied Goulburn Country Motors.
Second prize is goods valued to $2000 from any Goulburn retailer and third prize is $500 of fuel donated by Merino Fuels.
Tickets are available in the front of Goulburn Square, in Goulburn Square, at The Marketplace and soon to be at Trappers Bakery. Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings also available at some of the selling spots.
The raffle is drawn on Thursday, December 27 at 11am at Goulburn Square.
