Both southbound lanes were closed to allow space for the helicopter to enter and leave the scene. One of the lanes reopened at about 3.45pm while the other lane remained closed for a longer period.
The Crash Investigation Unit, emergency services and Roads and Maritime Services attended the scene.
At 5pm there was a 6km queue of traffic.
