Last year’s Yuletide Mail Trail gate decorating competition was of a very high level in Towrang. Judge Dennis Isbister found it difficult to select the top three entries. However, for originality, presentation and portraying of the spirit of Christmas in the Towrang environment, the following were the selected prizewinners: 1st, Jen and Alan Goulder for their ‘Cold as Ice’ Christmas fishy entry; 2nd, Helen and Guiseppe Bucciol for yet another authentic Aussie bush-style theme; and (jointly) 3rd Helena and Robert Bozzetto for a warming fire setting complete with elves and Jean Morrison for a nativity scene with an Aussie setting. Thank you not only to those who entered the competition, but also to all other residents who decorated their gate or house to add a bit of a buzz to the season.

Next general meeting will be February 8.
Training sessions (pumping, driving, first aid etc) are being organised to keep our skills current, on the second Sunday of each month from 9.30am at the fire station. Morning tea will be provided. The first session was water hydraulics on Sunday January 13; very welcome in this heat.
Let’s talk about lime: It’s fantastic stuff, agriculturally speaking. Absolutely ideal for our acidic Southern Tablelands soils. Spreads beautifully around the paddocks from the spreaders during these long, hot days with just a little bit of breeze to lift a plume of white against the sky. Before you know it, you have the Rural Fire Service on your doorstep because passing motorists have thought it was a fire and, doing the right thing, rang Triple Zero and called it in, then we get paged. A simple call to the duty phone will make us aware you are spreading lime if someone reports smoke. Phone: 0438 429 271.
No fires, please, over the next few months. This means lighting, slashing, mowing, grinding. We would all be ecstatic if we did not have to attend any incidents during this long, hot summer.

A good turnout for the Carols and Cricket event held just before Christmas. Thank you to all who attended. A reminder that there is no church service in January. These will recommence on the fourth Sunday of every month from February 24 until November.
