Heavy vehicles are being permitted to slowly pass the incident site using the slow shoulder.
Delays and intermittent stoppages are still expected.
Light vehicles can detour via the Old Hume Highway or consider using Macquarie Pass as an alternative route.
Motorists are reminded there are lane closures in place on Macquarie Pass between Clover Hill Road and Mount Murray Road.
Roads and Maritime Services personnel are widening shoulders, installing a guardrail and improving drainage.
A speed limit of 40km/h is in place.

The Hume Motorway remains closed northbound at Yerrinbool due to a crash involving two trucks just past Sierra Street.
According to the Transport Management Centre, light vehicles travelling north and heavy vehicle combinations up to 19m long and under 4.1m high can divert via the Old Hume Highway through Alpine.
B-Doubles over 19m in length are being parked however they should avoid the area and consider using an alternative rest area to park.
B-Doubles up to 19m in length can consider detouring at Yass and use Lachlan Valley Way to Cowra, Mid Western Highway to Bathurst and the Great Western Highway to Sydney.
This will add around three hours extra travel time.
Northbound traffic remains heavy so motorists in the area are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time.
A Fire and Rescue spokesman said HAZMAT crews had arrived on the scene to assess the air quality and any run-off into nearby paddocks and creeks.
“The EPA has been notified and they’re liaising with HAZMAT crews. They’ll speak with the trucking company as well,” the spokesman said.
“Crews will continue to monitor any toxic gases and any run-off to make sure it doesn’t impact the environment.”
The spokesman said the HAZMAT operation was expected to continue late into the day.

Peak-hour traffic is backed up for more than 10 kilometres after a two truck crash on the Hume Motorway at Yerinbool.
The crash, which happened just after 5am on Tuesday morning, closed two northbound lanes on the Hume Motorway.
A diversion is in place for light vehicles via the Old Hume Highway.
Heavy vehicles are being parked on the side of the motorway.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said two male drivers aged about 65 and 30, were transported to Bowral and Liverpool hospitals with lacerations to their limbs.
Emergency services and traffic crews are at the scene of the crash.
This includes police, maintenance crews, the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, allow additional travel time and follow the directions of crews on site.
Four ambulance crews responded to the accident.
