Writing About Art with Sarah Rice is being presented in three workshops in Yass, Harden/Murrumburrah and Goulburn.
Sarah Rice is a poet/writer, visual artist and theorist. She has won many awards for her poetry. Her first full-length poetry collection called Fingertip of the Tongue was released with UWAP in 2017.
Ms Rice said the three-hour workshops are designed to help creatives design written content for the web, artists statements, reviews, or for grant writing.
“This could be useful for those running web pages, writing grants, and writing for print with a focus on writing about your own art to stimulate interest in your work,” Ms Rice said.
She will lead creatives using a wide range of exercises to stimulate and encourage creative responses as well as conceptual and theoretical modes of writing.
“My main aim will be to encourage people to engage critically with their work (and others) - and that the workshops will focus on how to think about art, what questions to ask of it - and oneself.” Ms Rice said.
“The three hour course will also cover how to write about art, how to generate and identify concepts, words, metaphors and associations that motivate the work - drawn from a number of different sources.”
Southern Tablelands Arts (STARTS) executive Susan Conroy said the workshop will encourage creatives to feel more confident and creative about their approach to writing their own work and others.
“This would be useful for creatives to help with writing artist's statements, grant proposals and art reviews as well as building an online presence for those with or developing web pages,” Ms Conroy said.
“We believe that artists and creatives need to be able to communicate ideas in a way that is effective for winning grants, awards, commissions or to get exhibition or performance opportunities in the cultural institutions in our region.
“We were inspired by Sarah when she talked about her writing and visual arts practice at our Wine Press event in 2018.
“It was her passion about bringing words and images together, that we think will change how creatives speak about their own works and creative practice.”
The workshop costs $50 and has been subsidised by the ANZ Seeds of Renewal Grant and Southern Tablelands Arts.
The session in Goulburn will be held on Tuesday, March 5 from 11am to 3.30am at the Civic Centre in Bourke St.
In Yass, it is on Monday, February 25 at the Yass Soldiers Club from 1pm to 4pm.
