The family concert on February 17 in the hall of Trinity Catholic College proved popular with the kindergarten crowd, cross-legged on the floor for Peter and the Wolf.
Encouraged to call out the instruments playing the parts of animals – “The cat! The duck! The wolf! The grandpa!” – one went so far as to call the timpany “The elephants!”
Narrated by Charles Hudson and conducted by Leonard Weiss, the 21-member small symphony orchestra led the audience through a pleasant half hour or so rendition of Sergei Prokofiev’s 1936 classic.
The symphonic fairy tale for children promotes ‘Boy Scout’ virtues such as vigilance, bravery and resourcefulness, as well as a victory of ‘man’ over ‘nature’.
Brought to Goulburn by the (former) Regional (now Hume) Conservatorium, conductor Weiss said the Canberra Sinfonia was delighted to bring its performance to the attentive audience, and suggested they would return for future dates, though these are yet to be confirmed.
