It all began on February 9 when Ted Goad , Merv Back and Mark Stutchbury contested the Proximity Canberra Tri-Series Race at Ronds Terrace in Canberra. Poor water quality caused the closure of Lake Burley Griffin, in turn causing the event to become a run-ride-run duathlon. Ted and Merv took part in the sprint distance event comprising a 2.5km run, 20km cycle and a second 5km run with Merv excelling in his age group to take third place. Ted also performed well to take home fifth in his age group.
Mark took part in the Olympic distance event , which also doubled as a National selection race meaning competitors from all over the nation were there to try to qualify for next year's World Championships. In the 5km run, 40km cycle, 10km run event Mark was a creditable ninth in his age group.
On the Weekend of Feb 23 and Feb 24 Kerry Baxter and former Goulburnian Terry Withers took part in the TREX off road Triathlon at Lake Crackenback. In a large field of competitors Terry (fourth Age Group) edged Kerry into fifth in the 50-59 yr age group. On the Sunday the two athletes backed up to take part in the Snowy Mountains half Marathon trail run (21km) which takes part primarily on the Thredbo valley track and the Lake Crackenback Village surrounds. On this day Kerry turned the tables by winning his age group by a mere 17 seconds over Terry in second place.
On the same weekend four athletes took part in the Big Husky triathlon series in Huskisson. All four took part in the sprint distance event (750m swim, 20km Bike, 5km run) .Barbara Beard had a pleasing return to competition placing fourth in her age group, Lori McWhirter also performed strongly taking out fifth in her age group. Merv Back was eighth and Rod McWhirter 12th in their respective age groups.
Meanwhile in local Aquathon news, wins have been fairly well shared in all three distances in rounds 12, 13 and 14 with fields affected by return to school, holidays and testing weather conditions.
In the Novice event recent fastest times have been recorded by Kelly McKellar, Violet Ottley and Jasmine McWhirter for the ladies and Charlie Moss and septuagenarian Peter Tapp in the Men's.
The Intermediate division has seen Heather Moss, Nadine Moroney and Erica Williams share the spoils whilst Rod McWhirter and Damian Ottley have battled out first and second places for the men.
Andrea Ottley has dominated the ladies field in the long distance event with Olivia Stutchbury the only competitor to beat her in the last three weeks of February. For the men Jaemin Frazer has been victorious twice with Angus Taylor the only other winner. Kerry Baxter , Andy Oberg and Mark Stutchbury have battled out the minor placings.
