Hume MP Angus Taylor recently announced $423,826 to replace Thornford Road bridge on the Currawang Road, southeast of Goulburn.

The council had planned the work this financial year, allocating funds in its budget. The project is expected to cost $847,652.

Mr Taylor said while there was a great deal of history tied up in timber bridges, they had "passed their used-by date in terms of safety and efficiency."

"We're replacing these old structures with safer, more reliable concrete bridges and approaches. It's a (government) priority to support regional transport through the Bridges Renewal Program, which provides up to 50 per cent of the cost of repairs and replacement for these bridges," he said.

Residents had also been calling for the work, especially since Komungla Bridge on Currawang Road was replaced. They argued their access was still cut off during flooding.

Mayor Bob Kirk welcomed the funding and said the 70-year-old structure, which had a 10-tonne load limit, was in urgent need of replacement.

"The new bridge will mean improved safety and a better stock route," he said.

Separate to the funding announcement, the council also plans to replace the May Street timber bridge in Goulburn at a cost of $850,000 in 2019/20.

Meantime, the Bridges Renewal Program has also provided $294,860 towards the $589,721 cost of replacing Crookwell River Bridge on Woodville Road at Crookwell. A new concrete structure will be built and the road approaches straightened.

In addition, the old slab concrete Diamond Creek Bridge at Binda will receive $560,000 towards the $1.121 million cost for a new concrete structure. Road approaches will be addressed.

Upper Lachlan Council Shire Mayor John Stafford said the upgrades would help local farmers and freight operators.

"Replacement of these bridges will remove the pinch points for heavy vehicles, improving access to Main Road 54 and the M31 Highway, saving operators time and money," he said.

"The bridge replacements will also provide nearby residents with improved access to the village of Binda, as well as Crookwell and Goulburn."
